As an Indian wedding photographer (and someone who’s been experienced with planning of Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh weddings), I’ve got to tell you – choosing the right wedding venue is HUGE. I’m talking about those little things that may not cross your mind at first but will make all the difference in your wedding photos. So, what do wedding photographers like me look for in a venue? Let’s dive into the three biggies: lighting, space, and ambiance.
LIGHTING: The true hero of your wedding photos
Let’s start with lighting. In photography, light is everything. I could have the fanciest camera in the world, but if the lighting is bad, it’s tough to work magic. Natural light, in particular, is a wedding photographer’s best friend.
Natural Light: If your venue has big windows, a skylight, or outdoor spaces that allow soft, even natural light to pour in—it’s a gold mine for your photos. Whether it’s the morning glow during the bride’s getting-ready shots or the golden hour for couple portraits, natural light creates beautiful, warm, and flattering images. If you’re looking at venues, take note of the amount of light they get at different times of day.
Artificial Light: Now, if you’re thinking of an indoor or evening wedding, no problem! Just make sure your venue has decent, ambient lighting—not too harsh or too dim. Chandeliers, uplighting, and well-placed spotlights can create mood while still providing enough brightness for great photos. Ballroom ceiling lights are often very bright and placed directly above you. This creates harsh, downward lighting that can cast shadows on people’s faces. Instead of that soft, flattering glow that makes everyone look amazing, you might end up with shadows under your eyes, nose, and chin. Trust me, no one wants to look back at their wedding photos and see that! Photographers work hard to create soft, even lighting that flatters everyone. But when ceiling lights are working against us, it becomes a constant battle to soften those harsh shadows. This is especially tricky during intimate moments like your first dance or during toasts, where the focus is on capturing emotion. Harsh lighting just doesn’t do justice to those special moments. A photographer will also think about how the lighting will change throughout the day, especially for Indian weddings, where ceremonies like the Baraat or Nikah happen under the sun, but the reception’s happening in the evening. Make sure your venue can handle it all.
You’ve probably noticed that most hotel ballroom lights have a yellowish or orange tint. That’s because they often use tungsten or incandescent bulbs, which can give everything (and everyone) a warm, almost orange glow. Now, while warm tones can be cozy in some settings, they’re not always flattering in photos. Imagine your stunning white wedding dress or the rich colors of your bridal lehenga looking off because of yellow-tinted lighting. Not ideal, right? We want your skin tones to look natural and your outfit colors to pop! But when ceiling lights are the only light source, that warm tint can be hard to avoid, making post-processing and color correction a challenge.
Great photos are all about depth, contrast, and dimension. Unfortunately, ceiling lights in ballrooms tend to create flat lighting – everything looks evenly lit, but with no depth or contrast. It makes the photos feel lifeless and one-dimensional, which is the last thing you want for your wedding album. As photographers, we love playing with light and shadow to add depth to your images. Whether it’s creating that dreamy glow during your couple portraits or capturing the energy of the dance floor, light helps tell your wedding story. Ceiling lights, though, just flatten everything out, making it hard to create dynamic, dramatic photos.
I’m not saying hotel ballrooms are a no-go for weddings – far from it! But if you’re having your wedding in a ballroom, here are a few ways to work around those ceiling lights. Consider Additional Lighting: one of the best ways to improve ballroom lighting is by bringing in additional, professional lighting. Uplights, string lights, and even candles can soften the harshness of ceiling lights and add a beautiful glow to the room. Ask your venue or wedding planner if they offer lighting packages or work with a lighting vendor to enhance the space. Talk to Your Photographer: your photographer and videographer knows how to handle tricky lighting, so talk to them about your concerns.
We always bring our own lighting equipment, like softboxes or off-camera flashes, to create more flattering light. We are wizards with lighting – we just need to know what they’re up against! Dim the Overhead Lights: if possible, ask your venue to dim the overhead lights during key moments. For example, during your first dance, dimming the ceiling lights and adding some romantic uplighting or spotlights can create a much more intimate, flattering atmosphere for photos. Get Creative with Lighting Decor: adding decorative lighting like fairy lights, lanterns, or even hanging Edison bulbs can make a huge difference in how the room feels and photographs. Not only will this add warmth and ambiance to the space, but it will also help draw attention away from the harsh ceiling lights.
SPACE: The more, the merrier
When it comes to space, it’s not just about fitting all your guests—it’s also about giving your photographer room to move around, set up equipment, and capture different angles.
Indoor Space: Does the venue have large, open areas? A packed space can limit movement and the variety of shots. We love venues that have high ceilings, expansive ballrooms, and wide hallways. It allows us to get those sweeping shots that capture the grandeur of your big day.
Outdoor Space: Outdoor venues are a dream for those romantic, candid shots. Think lush gardens, wide open fields, or beachside views. But beyond beauty, we’re also looking for space where we can move freely and capture a variety of photos—close-ups, wide-angle, and everything in between. Plus, a bit of room means we can sneak in those magical drone shots if you’re into that!
Dedicated Areas for Key Moments: We always look for specific spaces for important parts of your wedding. Does the venue have a nice corner for the first look? Is there enough space at the mandap for me to get close and capture the intimate moments of your vows? Is there a dance floor that’s roomy enough to capture the full energy of your Sangeet or reception?
AMBIANCE: The Vibe You Want in Your Photos
Finally, ambiance. This is all about the venue’s feel. When you walk into a venue, do you get that “wow” factor? Is it romantic, vibrant, traditional, or modern? The vibe of your venue plays a big role in how your photos will turn out.
A beautifully designed venue speaks for itself. Ornate details like grand staircases, intricate woodwork, or stylish modern decor provide natural backdrops that elevate your photos without needing too many props. A venue’s design should complement the theme of your wedding and enhance the storytelling through the lens.
The colors of a venue can either enhance or clash with your wedding’s aesthetic. For instance, if your wedding is full of bright Indian wedding colors like reds, golds, and oranges, a venue with neutral tones can really make them pop in photos. And don’t forget about textures—stone walls, wooden beams, or lush greenery can add so much depth and character to your images.
As photographers, we don’t just capture what things look like—we capture what they feel like. That’s why the ambiance of your venue matters so much. Whether it’s an intimate garden ceremony or a lavish ballroom reception, the venue’s overall energy sets the tone for how your photos will feel when you look back on them. When I’m scouting a venue or even walking into a wedding, I’m constantly scanning the space for what will make the most epic shots. So when you’re choosing your venue, think about it from a photographer’s point of view. Look at the light, the space, and the ambiance. After all, those elements will play a huge part in how your wedding story is captured for generations to come. In short, your wedding venue is more than just a place to celebrate—it’s the setting for some of the most important memories of your life. Make sure it checks all the boxes, not just for you and your guests, but also for your photographer to work their magic.
