Wedding Cultures – Hungarian Weddings
In Hungary, people usually get married in spring or summer when the weather is warm and nice. The young couple go and make invitation personally if they really want you to go to their wedding ceremony and the following wedding party. They visit you and announce their wedding personally and will formally ask you to attend the wedding. ( Just keep in mind that the size of the country is very small so visiting family members is not a big deal. ) It is the right time when relatives ask them about their plans for the future or what they hope to get as a present.
Hungary is a civil law country, therefore a wedding ceremony in the church is not recognized by the legal system. The result is that there must be a ceremony at the mayor’s house before getting married in the church. So if you want to get married in the church you will have to have two ceremonies, one at the mayor’s office, one in the church. After the ceremony the guests congratulate the bride and the groom after the ceremony.
The groom always wears a formal suit (black, dark blue or grey). The bride wears the traditional white wedding dress because white is the color of truth. Some people wear a traditional Hungarian wedding Traditional Hungarian wedding dresses were very colorful and covered with elaborate embroidery. The embroidery would also cover the bride’s head dress. Underneath the dress were layers of petticoats. Most modern Hungarian brides opt for the American white wedding dress.
As far as the wedding party concerned, some people go to a restaurant others like to stay at home and prepare everything themselves.
The dinner usually starts with meat soup then comes the meat which was cooked in the soup. They serve it with horse-radish and bread. The second course is fried meat, pork or chicken with potatoes or rice and salad. Then comes stuffed cabbage which is a national Hungarian dish with sour cream. You can drink red wine, white wine, beer or refreshements during the dinner. There is a band which plays after dinner and everybody goes to dance. Cakes are put on the tables. There is always a very big cake with a figure on it. It is cut and served for the guests by the fiance or “new wife”.
During the party, some menfolk among the guests may try to “kidnap” the bride and release her only for a “ransom”. They take the bride by “force” and they only release her if the groom does soem foolish thinkgs in front of everybody. So if you are a groom, you better have your buddies around your bride otherwise you she would be taken and you have to make a fool of yourself to get her back. I am not joking!!!
Midnight is a very important point of time in a wedding party. There is a special dance where everybody gives some money to the bridesman in return for a dance with the bride until the groom dances and takes her away. When they return after a while the new wife wears new dress, red mostly and they dance till morning. Yes, you read it right, until morning! The party goes until morning!
